Excerpt Not the Hot
Chick (Book 1 of the series):
Jessi Wallace eyed
the cute bartender's butt the way a hungry cat might eye an unsuspecting bird.
She actually licked her lips. "I am so
going to do him."
Layla Messner held
back a sigh, took another sip of her lemon-drop martini, and asked herself for
the sixth time that night, Why am I here,
again?
She should have known
better than to accept Jessi's invitation to go out tonight. They weren't really
friends, just across-the-hall neighbors in the same apartment complex that
housed many of the Buff State students here in Buffalo, New York. She and Jessi
would nod and smile when they passed each other, occasionally stop and chat,
but they'd never partied together. So it had been quite the surprise when Jessi
tapped on her door two hours ago with a smile and an invitation: "Feel
like cutting loose tonight?"
Silly Layla, thinking
Jessi was trying to be friendly. More likely, she just wanted a wingman—or
wingwoman in this case—and had no one else to step out with.
Jessi leaned over the
bar provocatively in her low-cut top, calling to the bartender and pointing to
her empty glass. "Can I have another down here?"
Oh, God, she was
actually batting her eyelashes. And the way she was leaning to flash her
cleavage, it was a wonder her boobs didn't fall right out onto the bar.
Layla glanced down at
her own chest, pulling back her shoulders. Her boobs weren't so bad, even if
they weren't shown off as blatantly as Jessi's. Layla knew she had nothing to
be ashamed of in that department. If anything, she'd been generously blessed.
The problem was, she
was a little too blessed in other areas as well. "Curvy" would be a
kind description. "Chubby" might be more to the point.
Jessi, on the other
hand, had a body that was every guy's wet dream. She had big breasts and a tiny
little waist that curved out to a rounded pair of hips. The tight, short skirt
she wore had every guy in the room craning his neck for a second look at her
ass.
The place was pretty
quiet for a Friday night. But then again, it was the weekend before spring break,
and much of the college-age crowd that usually frequented the Shamrock had already
left town. Layla had a four-hour drive to get to her parents' house and was
wiped from spending the day with a class of hyper first graders. Morning would
be soon enough to make the trip home.
The bartender ambled
down their way and gave them both a smile. "Ready for another,
ladies?"
Layla's heart warmed
at the way he included her in the offer. He didn't just ignore her, the way
some guys did, to focus on her prettier companion.
Jessi smirked and
tapped the rim of her glass. "I'd like another Hard Fast Screw
please." She practically purred the order for the Shamrock's variation of
a screwdriver.
"You got
it." He directed his gaze at Layla, and her heart gave a little flip. It
was too dark in the bar to tell what color his eyes were, but she knew they
were beautiful. Just like the rest of him. Dark hair, a buff body, and a
gorgeous face. High cheekbones, a straight nose, chiseled lips. Those lips
moved, but Layla was too mesmerized by his looks to pay any attention to what
he was saying.
She blinked.
"Uh, excuse me?"
"He asked if you
want another drink." Jessi's cutesy moves were forgotten as she gave Layla
the death stare. Don't poach on my
territory.
As if. Still, a girl
could dream, couldn't she?
Excerpt Not the Stand In (Book 2 in the
series):
Since Cam had to work
in a few hours, they decided to go to the Shamrock. Because it was still early
on a week night, they had no trouble finding a table. "What would you
like?" he asked as Layla took her seat.
Just as she was about
to ask for a beer, she remembered her plan to seduce him. What had Jessi
ordered the night they came here? Oh, right. "I'd like a Hard Fast
Screw." Layla looked him straight in the eye and hoped she wasn't blushing
as she ordered the bar's version of a screwdriver.
A light glinted in
his hazel eyes and he pressed his lips together as though trying not to smile.
"Coming right up."
Layla let go a sigh
as he headed to the bar for their drinks. Channeling Jessi seemed to do the
trick. Tonight, Layla decided, her mantra would be WWJD: What Would Jessi Do?
Cam returned to the
table with her cocktail and his bottle of beer. "Cheers." He clinked
the mouth of his bottle to the rim of her glass and they both drank. The tangy
juice slid easily down Layla's throat. She couldn't taste the vodka but felt
its kick as it landed in her stomach. Warmth pooled in her middle and spiraled
through her.
She admired him as
she sipped her drink. The separate parts of his face—his square jaw, his strong
chin with a hint of a cleft, his straight nose—all came together beautifully.
Add to that his dark, wavy hair and a pair of greenish-brown eyes flecked with
gold and he was a perfect work of art. And when he smiled… God. It was enough
to make any girl drop her panties.
Fear fluttered
through her. Was she crazy, thinking she could get with him a second time? He
had his pick of women. Just looking around the bar, Layla spotted two or three
cute, hot girls who were much more his type than she was. She felt a sudden
urge to slug back the rest of her drink and bounce before she made a complete
idiot of herself.
No, you're not going to run. You have to try. The worst he can do is say no.
Excerpt Not the Friend with Benefits (Book 3
in the series):
They sipped their
cocoa in companionable silence. Layla tried not to let her thoughts dwell on
Paige, whoever she was. To distract herself, she gestured toward the skaters
young and old gliding by on the ice. "They make it look so easy."
"Lots of things
look easy. Let me ask you a question. When a kid comes to you whining that the
assignment is too hard or they can't figure out their homework, do you tell
him, ‘Oh, that's okay, Jimmy. If it's too hard, don't bother. Just forget the
homework.'"
She gave him a
withering look. "Don't be silly. Of course not."
"Right. You work
with him. Ask him what he doesn't understand. Go over it with him until you're
sure he gets it. You don't let him give up."
She held back a sigh.
"I have a feeling you're working up to something."
"Yeah, I am.
Following your example, I'd be a pretty lousy teacher if I let you give
up."
"I'm not giving
up." Being compared to a whiny schoolkid wasn't a compliment. "And I
don't whine."
He stared out at the
ice rink. "Okay." He took a sip, swallowed, then began to murmur in a
high, crybaby voice, "Wah, my legs feel like spaghetti. I can't lift my
feet, I'm gonna fall. Don't go so fast. You're going too fast, you'll make me
fall."
She gave him a shot
with her elbow. "Teachers are supposed to encourage their students,
doofus. Not make fun of them."
He huffed a laugh. "You got me there.
Okay, no more teasing. But you gotta promise you'll keep trying."
She smiled. "I
promise."
It was so nice,
joking around with Cam and hanging out. Just because they'd hooked up in the
past didn't mean they couldn't be friends. Though Cam had indicated he'd be
just fine adding "benefits" to the mix, Layla had no intention of
letting that happen. First of all, Drew was in her life now. Second, Layla knew
she couldn't be that casual about sex with Cam. She liked him too much. It
wouldn't be hard for her to develop deeper feelings for him.
Not because he was
hot, though of course he was. His thick, wavy head of hair made her want to run
her fingers through it. His hazel eyes brimmed with mischief, and just a glance
from him could send a tingle through her. More than that, he was smart,
ambitious, and a genuinely good guy. It would be so easy to fall for him.
And what would Drew say if he knew all that? Maybe he'd
want you to stop seeing him. Isn't that why you've kept your friendship on the low?
Because you don't want to take that chance?
Excerpt Not the Placeholder (Book 4 in the
series):
Cameron Cleary strode
into his living room, wearing only a towel wrapped low around his hips. With
another towel, he scrubbed his wet hair.
He flashed a grin at
Layla, settled on his futon. "I'll be ready to go in a sec."
She grinned right back. "Take your time.
I'm in no rush."
Wasn't that the
truth. She could happily watch him, with or without clothes, all day long. Her
mouth watered at the roll of his shoulders as he dried his hair. His skin
glistened, still damp from the shower. A drop of water trickled down his chest.
How she'd love to lick it off.
God, she was a ho. Though
she'd spent the night at his place, and they'd slept late this morning—which
hadn't involved much sleeping—she still couldn't get enough of him. She might be sore, but it was a good kind of
sore. She'd jump at the chance of another go.
Layla felt no shame
whatsoever. Yep, a ho for sure.
She nodded at the
towel. "Why the sudden modesty?" It wasn't like she hadn't seen
everything he had to offer.
His dark eyebrows
lifted. "Why, Ms. Messner. Are you suggesting I traipse around butt
naked?"
"You bet. You're
depriving me of my favorite view."
"Really. Well,
then…" He swiveled his hips, fingering the edge of the towel hanging
there.
She groaned.
"Come on, don't tease."
Imitating a drum
roll, he loosened the towel and flashed a hip while keeping the best parts
hidden. "Ba bum bum ba bum."
An instant later he
flung the towel and it landed in her face. By the time she snatched it off, he
had already turned and was headed down the hall.
"Aw, no
fair." At least she got to ogle his sexy ass as he ambled toward his
bedroom.
As she waited for him
to dress, she scrolled through messages on her phone. A knock sounded at the
door. "Should I get it?" she called.
"Yeah, would
you?"
Layla opened the door
to a petite, slim young woman with short, dark hair and a mischievous smile.
"Hi. Is Cam here?"
Who was this? Layla
knew Cam had no sisters. "Uh, yeah, he's—"
Without waiting for
further invitation, the pixie skipped past Layla into the living room.
"Hey, Camster, where the hell are you?"
"Paige?"
Wearing jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt, he stood in the bedroom doorway. The
girl rushed down the hall and leaped at him. He instinctively grabbed her as
she threw her arms around his neck and her legs around his hips.
"I can't believe
how long it's been!" she cried.
Cam gently hugged the
slender young woman in his arms while Layla looked on silently.
