Book Blitz: The Neverland Wars

The Neverland Wars is released this week, and I am thrilled beyond words for it. Peter Pan has always been one of my favorite characters, and for as many adaptations as there are, I think too few people sit down with the original book to see just how wonderful J.M. Barrie's storytelling is. The Neverland Wars isn't a retelling of the Peter Pan story, its a continuation. I didn't want to contradict anything the original story established, and working within those confines gave me a chance to push my creativity to new places and grow the story into something modern. The following are ten of my favorite quotes from Barrie's original novel, and ten small insights into why I felt compelled to write The Neverland Wars and push this timeless story forward into our century.

Synopsis:

Magic can do a lot—give you flight, show you mermaids, help you taste the stars, and… solve the budget crisis? That’s what the grown-ups will do with it if they ever make it to Neverland to steal its magic and bring their children home.

She’ll be out of place as a teenager in Neverland, but she won’t be the only one. Peter Pan’s constant treks back to the mainland have slowly aged him into adolescence as well. Soon, Gwen will have to decide whether she’s going to join impish, playful Peter in his fight for eternal youth… or if she’s going to scramble back to reality in time for the homecoming dance.

The excerpt...Meeting Peter
A chill crept down Gwen’s spine, and her eyes could not refocus fast enough. She clutched fistfuls of Rosemary’s quilt, instinctively preparing to throw herself under it if there was a monster lurking in the dark. Gwen wasn’t afraid in the normal sense of the term, but her heart raced as she noticed the boy sitting on the rocking chair in the corner of the room.
The chair rocked with a squeak as he stood up from it. Walking slowly toward the window, he came into view as he entered the moonlight. He stared at Gwen, and she stared back.
His eyes were steady in their intensity, but impish in all other manners. They impulsively surveyed the room, never lingering on any particular aspect of it, but always coming back to Gwen. A vine of ivy was wrapped around his waist and strewn across his shoulder like a belt and sash, just barely holding his tattered shirt and shorts to him. His clothes seemed held together with bits of twine and magic. He moved fluidly in his own skin. Gwen wasn’t even conscious of how much she envied his playful motion. Even with his gangly, broad shoulders, he stood tall with a childish sense of confidence.
Gwen wasn’t sure, but he looked like a freshman. He couldn’t have been younger than fourteen.
He wore hemp bracelets and braided jewelry around his wrists; pine-cone chips and wooden beads were woven into his necklace. They jangled as he walked.
“This is your sister?” he asked, his question seemed rudely incredulous. “Hollyhock, let me see her.”
Before Gwen could make sense of this remark, an exploding light burst from an inexplicable place in the darkness. Gwen was disoriented when the light came so quickly at her. Circling up around her, the golden light left a trail of fast dissolving glitter that rained down on her. What little of it touched her glowed faintly on her skin before disappearing. It felt like a pins-and-needles numbness in the best possible way.
The bright light that radiated from Hollyhock’s little body half-blinded Gwen in the otherwise dark room, but Hollyhock flitted in front of her, and Gwen caught a glimpse of the creature. Her eyes were unusually wide, and her massive irises were an otherworldly color for which Gwen had no name. Her itty-bitty lips and nose were hardly there at all, but her sunny hair was pulled back in two long, dangling braids. Her limbs were like twigs, and she wore a leaf draped over her like a tunic. Gwen didn’t need to be told that she was looking at a fairy.
“Huh,” he responded, sitting down on the hardwood floor of Rosemary’s room. “You said your sister was a kid.”
“She is, Peter!” Rosemary defended. “I told you—she’s a big kid.”
Finally addressing her properly, Peter spoke to Gwen in a condescending tone. “I expected you to be younger.”
“As did I of you,” Gwen curtly returned.
Peter, the young man, shrugged with his eyebrows and looked away, indicating that he was not going to bother engaging a hostile girl.
Gwen didn’t care. She couldn’t have cared. While Hollyhock played in the fish mobile above the bed like an aquatic merry-go-round, Gwen clutched Rosemary close to her. “Rosemary, we were so worried! Thank God you came back.”
“I had to come back, Gwenny,” Rosemary told her. “I had to come back for you.” Hollyhock, tiring of the mobile, zipped back down and buried herself in Rosemary’s hair, poking her head out of it and trying to part it like curtains. Rosemary giggled, taking Gwen’s hand. “Let’s go.”
“Whoa, wait, no.” Gwen grabbed hold of Rosemary’s arm. “We’re not going anywhere. Mom and Dad are worried about you. The cops were here… You can’t go—where?”
Hollyhock, on Rosemary’s shoulder, said something that sounded like a sneeze and a hum. Rosemary translated the one word she had already learned in the fairy tongue. “Neverland.”

The Dreamer’s Endeavor

With just a pinch of Peter’s pixie dust,
Why, I could set sail  through the midnight sky
And cure my incurable wanderlust,
Venturing to where my sleeping dreams lie.
Flying is for those who never look back,
Or down, or anywhere but dead ahead.
In a cosmic kamikaze attack,
Stars fall en masse from high up overhead.
Do you know where dreams go when they expire?
They’re always somewhere in our memories.
And I would be a dreamer-for-hire,
Selling everyone such grand fantasies.
It’d be easy to do from Neverland,
Where the dreams grow like wild blackberries:
So ripe that they fall right into your hand,
So small that they’re delivered by fairies.
I’d shoot like a star  to that very place
That our dreams lead us to, when we give chase.

The Blue Dress Theory: Blue Dresses Have More Adventures

I can't be the only one who has noticed this. Have you ever been reading a book or watching a movie, and when you see a girl in a blue dress, you know that fantastic things are about to happen?

I feel like the girl-in-a-blue-dress is an archetype, cemented in our cultural cannon by a few great works of children's literature. Still, no one ever seems to talk about how any time a young girl puts on a blue dress she becomes destined for a wonderful journey to a strange and magical new world.

I think Alice's Adventures in Wonderland started it. The idea of children's literature as we know it was pretty much invented by the Victorians, and Lewis Carroll wrote the defining children's book of the nineteenth century. Alice might just be sitting around in a field listening to her sister read, but she's sitting in a blue dress, so its no surprise that moments later she's tumbling into Wonderland, using that dress as a parachute.

More than half a century later, J.M. Barrie wrote about Wendy Darling's trip to Neverland, and her blue nightgown became an iconic image through centuries of adaptions. From Mabel Lucie Attwell's original illustrations to the animated Disney movie, the one thing everyone seems to know for sure is that Wendy would be in a blue dress.

And let's not forget L. Frank Baum's contribution to this patern. Whether she's in ruby slippers or silver slippers, on page or on screen, Dorthy Gale is always depicted in a blue dress when she makes her way to Oz.

I've always thought of Alice, Wendy, and Dorthy as a holy trinity of brave girls, capable of navigating impossible worlds beyond their own. Each is a blue-dress adventuress, who can take the strangeness of magic in stride until she makes her way home once again. I think the world could use more stories about bright girls who can handle themselves in dangerous other-worlds, and when I put Gwen in a blue dress, it was a homage to more than just the traditional depictions of Wendy Darling. I want to bring this trend of competent, feminine smarts and beautiful blue dresses back. I know it's not dead, because one of the best children's books that was published while I was growing up did it, too.

Coraline

You'd better believe Coraline was in a blue dress when she stumbled into her alternate reality and found the enchanting, bewitching Other Mother. Neil Gaiman knows whats up, and so do I. Girls in blue dresses have more adventures, and I'm excited that with The Neverland Wars I can add to the collection of excited, delightful girls who put on a blue dress and go off confidently adventuring, into enchanted new worlds. When Gwen leaves her modern home in suburbia in a blue dress, it is to fly beyond the stars, guile information out of mermaids, outwit other lost children, face-off with a crocodile, and more... because the world needs more girls in blue dresses.
